Call For Coordinators

We have a few open positions. If you’re interested in getting involved with MFA App Review this season check out the descriptions below. Then send us an email stating your interest to mfaappreview@gmail.com

Genre Coordinators

The bulk of our work is pairing up our MFA Applicants with one of our Readers. We  c h e r i s h  the fact that we’re entrusted with Applicants’ writing samples, and this sort of matchmaking is also extremely fun.

CNF Genre Matcher: Pairs each CNF Applicant with a CNF Reader and answers all CNF participants’ questions related to the process. This involves tetris-ing together great matches based on each applicant’s style and priorities for their work. It’s a great way to get to know early-career writers in this genre! The bulk of the work will take place from Oct 13 - Oct 27. Because our primary contact with applicants and readers is through email, either you or your collaborator should be able to check and reply to emails within a few days of receipt from Sept 1 - Nov 15. We also hold team meetings at the start of each month. We’ll accept 20 CNF applicants this year. Currently 2 open positions. These positions have been filled :)

Poetry Genre Matcher: Same as CNF Genre Matcher, but for Poetry. We’ll accept 40 poetry applicants this year. Currently 2 open positions. These positions have been filled :)

Fiction Genre Matcher: Same as CNF Genre Matcher, but for Fiction. We’ll accept 40 fiction applicants this year. Currently 1 open position. These positions have been filled :)

Publicity Pro

You’ll run the twitter account. You know how to swim thru the algorithm to attract more eyeballs, reach new potential readers/applicants, and communicate with follower-friends who are already readers and/or former/current applicants. You’ll share updates to social media publicizing our projects to potential applicants and readers and to our supporters (professors, CW program chairs and staff, publishers, and presses). You understand our tone and philosophy, and get how we want to position ourselves in this little slice of the literary world. Depending on your interest and availability, you can work with other team members to develop twitter Q&As, this season’s email newsletter, and/or other projects. This is a lighter, more intermittent role that runs from Sept 15 - Dec 15, during the application season, and again when acceptances start rolling in until mid-April.

Money Person

You’re reliable and organized. This role has a pretty low consistent time commitment, but may involve intermittent bursts of busyness. From Sept - Feb you’ll work with team members applying for grants from their affiliated institutions and track who brings in what, when, and how. You are able to consolidate idiosyncratic bookkeeping into a single social account (givebutter/venmo) that has the gentlest transaction costs + remains user-friendly so supporters and team members can easily deposit funds. You’ll also collaborate with team members to set up an ongoing donation fund and develop, monitor the back end of, and distribute the proceeds from a 24-hour fundraiser in the fall. Not required at all: If you have experience OR an interest in learning how to apply for grants, we would *certainly* welcome your efforts in that area, too. This position has been filled :)

Admin Person

Your organizational schemes have organizational schemes, and you’ve never met a document whose formatting you didn’t want to standardize. You’ll be the gentlest of thorns in MFA App Review’s side, checking in with other staffers to make sure ongoing projects stay on track and that important deadlines are met. You’ll help organize our Google Drive, sort through and streamline our spreadsheets, proofread documents and emails — in short, make sure our backend records are being well kept. Like the Publicity Pro, this is a lighter, more intermittent role; you’ll be busiest during application season (Sept 15 - Dec 15), and then again when acceptances start coming in (Feb through mid-April).

Who are we looking for?

You don’t need to have gone through an MFA for any of these positions (though it may help for some roles). MFA App Review has a small group of white cis writer friends who help us out, but we’re not accepting support from additional white cis people at this time as we have found over the years that it is actually more work to do so. Everyone else is welcome to join us!

If you’re interested in getting involved in any of these roles, please email us at mfaappreview@gmail.com with which position you are interested in and a little about yourself.  If you are interested in a role but concerned about your time/energy/qualifications, please message us anyway, and we can talk!
